Vemail ® Mobile Email App - How It Works

Phone App Software + Server

The Voice Genesis ® Vemail ® mobile email product is able to do what it does because it consists of two pieces:

(1) Voice Genesis Vemail phone app software you run on your phone.

(2) Voice Genesis VUUM ® messaging server (U.S. patent 7,277,951, Chinese patent ZL200480010864.6), operated by Voice Genesis to power the phone app and this web site.

The Vemail app software on your phone communicates with the VUUM server which communicates with your email provider's mail server. The VUUM server also powers this web site where you can configure Vemail, and login to manage settings and turn certain features on and off.

Installing Vemail

Once you have decided you want to use Vemail, there is a two step process to get Vemail up and running.

(1) Download Vemail - Your first step is to download Vemail onto your cell phone.

(2) Configure Vemail - Your second step is to configure Vemail. The configuration process can be completed either in the Vemail phone software, or on this web site. We recommend using this web site because it's easier and gives you access to more features.

You don't need to worry about installing the VUUM server. It is operated by Voice Genesis.

Retrieving Email

The diagram below illustrates what happens when you use Vemail to Retrieve Email.

Vemail VUUM Server Mail Server

Here is what happens when you select the Retrieve Email command from the Vemail app software on your cell phone. The Vemail app software sends a request to the VUUM server, which sends a request to your mail server. Your mail server then sends the VUUM server your messages, which are then transcoded. A list of those messages is then sent to your Vemail phone software. When you select an individual message it is downloaded from the VUUM server to your phone. This approach makes it possible to transcode (transform) email (and to some extent email attachments) so you can easily view them on your phone. Please note that if you have thousands of messages on your mail server, it may take the VUUM server awhile to process them all the first time you Retrieve Email (performance tip). After that you should be able to get your most recent messages in less than a minute. Please also note that for Yahoo Mail and free Hotmail accounts, Vemail will retrieve only unread messages off of the first page of your Yahoo or Hotmail inbox.

Sending Email

The diagram below illustrates what happens when you use Vemail to Send Email.

Vemail VUUM Server Mail Server Email Devices

Your email message travels from your phone to the VUUM server, through your outgoing mail server, to the message recipient's email device. This approach ensures that the VUUM server has a copy of your message, so that when you speak email the recipient can hear your voice via the link and phone number in the email message they receive (example below).

How They Hear Your Voice

When you Speak Email, your voice is recorded and delivered as a simple email that contains a link, and attachment, and a phone number (example below). The recipient can either click the link, open the attachment, or call the number to actually hear your voice. In this way they can hear your voice no matter what sort of email device they use.

  • Click - They can click the link in the message to automatically hear your voice played with the media player already on their device. If you have uploaded a picture or selected an Avatron (animated character), then that can be seen as well. (see Avatron message)

  • Open - Your recorded voice is also attached to the message in the popular wav format playable by most computers and many mobile devices.

  • Call - If their device can't play audio, they can always just make a phone call (toll free in U.S., Canada, Mexico) to hear your hear your message just like a voicemail.

  • Universal Delivery - This Universal Delivery approach ensures that your voice email message can be delivered to anyone on any email device. No matter what sort of device they use for email, they have a way to easily hear your voice.

Paying for Vemail

The $5/month you will pay for Vemail is paid in one of two ways.

(1) Carrier Billing - When you locate Vemail in the application catalog on your phone and select (download) it, your carrier tells you how much it will cost and puts the charge on your cell phone bill. This is by far the most common method. If a subscription price plan is used, your carrier will bill you every month until you delete the software off of your phone.

(2) Credit Card - In some cases you can download the Vemail app software (Java version) directly from us. In such a case the phone software will prompt you for your credit card information after a free trail period. Billing will continue monthly until you cancel (in the Vemail phone software see Settings -> Subscription -> Cancel Subscription).

To find out which method applies to you, select your carrier from our download page.

The cost of the VUUM server is covered by the $5/month. Some carriers will charge a little more and some a little less for Vemail. Airtime or data charges may apply depending on your plan. For more details select your carrier from the download page.
